State University College at Cortland grew from a two-year normal school teacher training institute in 1869 to a four-year program leading to a bachelor's degree, and to a master's degree in certain disciplines. The College is one of the county's largest employers. Higher education is also available at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3), located in Dryden.
