Job Description for Cortland Downtown Partnership Executive Director

The Cortland Downtown Partnership is a non profit 501(c)3 dedicated to cultivating the commerce and culture of Cortland. Over the past two years Cortland’s non-profit Downtown Partnership has helped attract more than $1.6 million to this community from Federal, State and foundation sources.

With local partners and the support of the Cortland community we have made downtown Cortland a more active and vibrant place to visit, work, and live. Through economic development, marketing, historic preservation, community development and fundraising the Cortland Downtown Partnership is making a difference in Central New York.

The CDP is looking to fill the position of Executive Director. The ideal candidate will be responsible for coordinating downtown revitalization activities including but not limited to economic development, marketing, historic preservation, community development and fundraising. The director must be self motivated, well organized, capable of operating independently and skilled at developing partnerships with other organizations and community leaders.

Applicants should have experience in two or more of the following: Historic preservation, planning, economic development, retail recruitment, marketing and event production, business incubator management, grants management.

The Cortland Downtown Partnership is seeking an enthusiastic, creative Executive Director with excellent communication skills to manage downtown Cortland, New York.

Duties include business recruitment, economic development, marketing and public relations, governmental relations, volunteer management and special events experience. Strong communication and consensus-building skills with downtown stakeholders is a must.

Work Objectives: Develop, in conjunction with the board of directors, downtown economic development strategies and utilize the community’s human and economic resources.

Become familiar with all persons and groups directly or indirectly involved in the downtown and be mindful of the roles of various downtown interest groups.

Develop strong and effective partnerships with community leaders and various entities such as Cortland County Chamber of Commerce, Cortland County Economic Development Office, Cortland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, SUNY Cortland, corporate leaders and others to strengthen the CDP’s ability to cultivate commerce and culture in Cortland.

Use professional experience to provide advice and information on successful downtown management. Develop downtown economic strategies that use historic preservation as an integral foundation for downtown economic development.

Help coordinate promotional events such as seasonal festivals or cooperative retail promotional events in order to improve the quality and success of events and attract people downtown; work closely with local media to ensure maximum coverage of promotional activities; encourage design excellence in all aspects of the promotion in order to advance an image of quality for the downtown.

Develop and conduct ongoing public awareness and education programs designed to enhance appreciation of the downtown’s unique offerings, entertainment options and architectural and other assets.

Represent the CDP to important constituencies at the local, state and national levels. Speak effectively on the program’s directions and findings, always mindful of the need to improve state and national economic development policies as they relate to smaller communities.

Provide leadership and guidance to the organization as it grows and its objectives evolve.

Coordinate activities of committees, volunteers, etc. Keep various entities on track to meet objectives. Manage all administrative aspects of the CDP, including, purchasing, record keeping, budget development, preparing reports, building databases, etc.

Position requires education/experience equivalent to a four-year degree and 3+ years experience. The salary range is $35-38,000.
