Marigolds on Main

Every year the Cortland Downtown Partnership adds a little color to historic Downtown Cortland with flowers and flower pots funded by downtown businesses. This year¹s planting day will be Saturday, June 7th.

Businesses, volunteer gardeners and community members are invited to join the Cortland Downtown Partnership¹s Beautification Committee beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday June 7th to plant the marigolds on Main Street. For the second year in a row, the flower chosen for the flowerbeds along Main Street are marigolds.

"Marigolds have a great bloom and they last all summer," said Vicky Delaney, owner of Cortland Picture Frame Company at 9 North Main Street and coordinator of the event for the Cortland Downtown Partnership.

Volunteers meet in front of the Daily Grind 24 Main Street with trowels, gloves, brooms and shovels. Planting the entire street takes between two and three hours.

"A unified plant palate creates a very striking impact along Main Street," said Lloyd Purdy, Director of the Cortland Downtown Partnership. "The volunteers who help make this happen deserve a lot of credit for the way downtown Cortland looks during the summer."

This is the second beautification project undertaken by the Cortland Downtown Partnership this year. The Partnership is also working on replacing the lights in Main Street¹s Street Trees and updating the sidewalk amenities like garbage receptacles, bike racks and directional signs.

The Cortland Downtown Partnership has, as one of its goals, a commitment to historic preservation in downtown Cortland and the creation of a walk-able, friendly environment for downtown shoppers, diners and visitors.

The Cortland Downtown Partnership achieves this goal by working with property owners and local businesses to make historic downtown Cortland a better place to live, work and visit.
