Cortland Downtown Partnership Presents First Golden Fork Award

The Cortland Downtown Partnership’s Promotion and Marketing Committee will present the first ever Golden Fork award to a downtown restaurant tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The award is in response to a public opinion poll taken during this year’s Sidewalk Festival and Taste of Downtown.

Initial results from surveys taken Friday and Saturday during the Sidewalk Festival indicate that more than 3,000 visitors turned out for the two-day event. Visitors to historic downtown Cortland who purchased a souvenir glass were treated to food and beverage samples from 23 downtown restaurants, eateries and taverns. The Taste of Downtown was produced by the Cortland Downtown Partnership and sponsored by Cortland Produce and Carbon Copies. Samples ranged from home-made Bear Claw’s at Frank & Mary’s to Chicken Parmegian samples at the Hollywood Restaurant. Chuck Masterpaul of Gilda’s was even featured on the afternoon cooking segment of WCNY’s Friday show for his signature Artichoke Blue Cheese Bisque.

“Restaurants are an important part of historic downtown Cortland,” said Lloyd Purdy, Director of the Cortland Downtown Partnership. “This year’s Sidewalk Festival and Taste of Downtown highlighted our great restaurants, taverns and eateries.”

After careful deliberation at a Tuesday morning meeting the Downtown Partnership’s promotion committee decided to award the first ever Golden Fork Award to Tuscan Grill. Tuscan Grill’s Sidewalk Sample included Scallop wrapped with prosciutto in a lemon butter sauce and a taste of red wine.

“We had an outstanding selection of food samples at the Sidewalk Festival,” said Purdy. “The Artichoke Blue Cheese Bisque from Gilda’s, the Gazpacho Soup from Hairy Tony’s and the Belgium Chocolate Truffle from Starr Bistro all got great reviews. Visitors were wowed by the variety, quantity and quality of our restaurants. The Tuscan Grill’s sample received the most praise from participants.”

Next year the Cortland Downtown Partnership expects more downtown restaurants will join the tour. The Partnership also intends to create several award categories. Next year’s Taste of Downtown and Sidewalk Festival is scheduled for the weekend of July 19.
