Frank & Mary’s is a true neighborhood diner. The eatery has been serving down-home cooking and bringing people together for 30 years, and for much of that time it has been open for 24 hours a day. Current owner Tom Hartnett has been involved with the diner since April of 2006, and he is a big proponent of the diner’s friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

The diner is still open for 24 hours from Thursday through Saturday; it opens at 4:00am and closes at 9:00pm during the rest of the week. The food is traditional American fare: eggs, home fries, and bacon for breakfast, deli & grilled sandwiches and burgers for lunch, and offerings of meatloaf, roast beef, and chicken tenders for dinner. Prices are quite affordable: an 8oz steak costs about $8.00.

Customers don’t come just for the food; the entertainment and opportunity to meet and greet friends old and new is another big attraction. Says Tom, “I just love coming to work here, to see all the people… it’s great.” People from all walks of life frequent Frank & Mary’s: families, retirees, college students; Tom has seen people in suits chatting with people who work manual labor jobs. People from Maryland and South Carolina make a point to stop at Frank & Mary’s on their annual vacations, and others come from Syracuse every week. The important thing, Tom says, is that everybody is welcome. The diner fosters interactions and a sense of community, and the jukebox is a big hit.

Between running the diner and serving his second term on the County Legislature, Tom meets all sorts of people, and it’s clear that he’s in the business because he loves people. His attitude is infectious, so stop in for lunch or a late-night snack, and see what the fuss is all about.
