Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

On May 29, 2013, at approximately 9:36 AM, City of Cortland Police Officers responded to a one vehicle personal injury motor vehicle accident in the area of 63 West Main Street, after several 911 calls were received. Upon investigation, it was determined a 1997 Ford Pickup Truck was traveling east on West Main Street, when it swerved in the opposite lane of traffic, while at the same time a passenger in front seat of the pickup fell out of the vehicle. The pickup truck struck the passenger who had fallen out onto the roadway, causing fatal injuries to the passenger.

Subsequent investigation revealed the front seat occupant was a 38 year old female who was engaged in an argument with the driver when she jumped from the moving vehicle. The operator of the pickup truck immediately stopped the vehicle and attempted to render aid.

Jupina E. Rice, 38, of State Route 41 Cincinnatus, was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The operator of the pickup truck, the victim’s husband, Joshua E. Rice, 29, of 1340 State Route 41, Cincinnatus, along with four juvenile passengers, were uninjured.

There are no charges at this time and the investigation is on going.
